Develop a business case for an institutional research data repository

Demonstrate to senior managers the benefits of developing an institutional research data repository. You may need to put together a business case – see the OGC website for templates and checklists. Useful sources of information to help you understand the options include Policy-making for Research Data in Repositories: A Guide and Keeping Research Data Safe.

Many national (eg the NERC Data centres), and some institutional data centres exist. Examples of policies for institutional research data repositories (eg depositor agreement, submission policy) include:

When setting up an institutional repository, "Building Exemplars for Institutional Data Repositories in the UK" from the Edinburgh DataShare project will be useful.

Why?

This will help build a persuasive case for institutional research data repositories to senior management. Upfront planning and design of the repository will help avoid later problems.
